June 19, 2015 – Every year, more than 60 automotive journalists from around the world are brought together to judge and award automotive industry internal combustion engines in a competition known as the “International Engine of the Year”.
This year is no different, and the judging panel determined the awards using subjective driving impressions and technical knowledge, taking into account characteristics such as fuel economy, noise, smoothness, performance and driveability.
BMW took the “International Engine of the Year” award this year thanks to its 1.5-litre three-cylinder electric-gasoline hybrid powertrain (found in the BMW i8) which earned the most points in the competition.
Other automakers picked up awards as well in different categories, and the results were as follows:
Sub 1-Litre: Ford 999cc three-cylinder turbo
1-Litre to 1.4-Litre: PSA Peugeot Citroen 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo
1.4-Litre to 1.8-Litre: BMW 1.5-litre three-cylinder electric-gasoline hybrid
1.8-Litre to 2-Litre: Mercedes-AMG 2-litre turbo
2-Litre to 2.5-Litre: Audi 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo
2.5-Litre to 3-Litre: BMW M 3-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder
3-Litre to 4-Litre: McLaren 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8
Above 4-Litre: Ferrari 4.5-litre V8
Green Engine: Tesla full-electric powertrain
New Engine: BMW 1.5-litre three-cylinder electric-gasoline hybrid
Performance Engine: Ferrari 4.5-litre V8
It is worth mentioning that Ford’s 999cc EcoBoost three-cylinder engine won the award for the past three years.
