Mitsubishi Motors admits falsifying fuel economy tests

April 20, 2016 – Mitsubishi Motors revealed today that it had falsified fuel economy data for more than 600,000 cars it produced for the Japanese market.

According to the company, tyre pressure figures were falsified by employees to improve mileage data. The inaccurate tests involved 157,000 of its own cars and 468,000 vehicles produced for Nissan. The models affected include Mitsubishi’s ek Wagon and eK Space, as well as Nissan’s Dayz and Dayz Roox – all sold exclusively in Japan.

The issue was discovered when Nissan reported inconsistencies in emissions data and Mitsubishi conducted an internal investigation to find that figures had been indeed falsified.

Mitsubishi said it would investigate whether figures were altered for any vehicles sold overseas.

Mitsubishi’s announcement follows on from the Volkswagen’s emissions scandal last year, in which it was found to have cheated diesel emissions tests.
