The Toyota Prius has set a new Nürburgring lap record, beating the Porsche 918 Spyder, Nissan GT-R Nismo and other mighty supercars. How is this possible? the record wasn’t for the lap time, it was about fuel efficiency.
Toyota put automotive journalist Joe Clifford behind the wheel of a Prius Plug-in hybrid (PHEV). All Clifford had to do was drive the hybrid around the Nordschleife without dipping below the 60km/h minimum average speed limit.
The Prius Plug-in hybrid completed the lap in almost 21 minutes, but did so by using just 5 tablespoons of fuel. It achieved a stunning 0.4 liter/100 kilometer average fuel consumption, with the engine kicking in only once.
