May 4, 2016 – Volkswagen has unveiled the new Golf GTI Clubsport S, the most powerful GTI ever made, and confirmed that the new hot hatch smashed the front-wheel drive record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The Golf GTI Clubsport S completed a full lap on the Nordschleife in 07:49:21, more than a second faster than Honda’s 306hp Honda Civic Type R (7:50.63), the 425hp BMW M4 (7:52.00) and the 707hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat (7:51.51).
The GTI Clubsport S features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 306hp and 380Nm of torque; the engine is coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox. It weighs 1,280kg, which is 30kg lighter than the GTI Clubsport, and it can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 260 km/h.
Volkswagen will only produce 400 copies of the Golf GTI Clubsport S, with 100 of those for Germany and 150 for the UK, and the rest to a few other markets.
