Test Drive: Volkswagen Scirocco R

Richie Honein recently got behind the wheel of the stylish and sporty Scirocco R from Volkswagen. Below are all the details you need to know about the hot hatch, in addition to a photo gallery from the test drive.

The new R-version is the most powerful production VW Scirocco ever built; to attain the high specific power in the 2.0 TSI, Volkswagen decided on a turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine.

Like all TSI engines, the R-version combines the efficiency of direct injection with the power of engine boosting. Despite downsizing the engine displacement and number of cylinders, the four-cylinder engine develops more power (+ 15 PS) and torque (+ 30 Nm) than the six-cylinder engine of the most recent Volkswagen Golf R32. Specifically, the 2.0-liter TSI in the new VW Scirocco R attains a maximum power of 265 PS at 6,000 rpm. Its maximum torque – 350 Nm – is available over 2,500 to 5,000 rpm.

The Volkswagen Scirocco R sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, that is not electronically limited until it reaches 250 km/h.  Those who choose the 6-speed DSG transmission can get from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds.

The Scirroco R comes with extra functional features such as Bi-xenon headlights, automatic climate control, Radio-CD system, tire pressure monitoring indicator and LED daytime running lights.
