FIA announces Formula E championship plans for 2014

FIA president Jean Todt has signed a new deal with Addax GP2 and GP3 team owner Alejandro Agag in addition to other investors from Hong Kong to promote the all-new first-of-its-kind electric single-seater racing championship dubbed “Formula E”.

The highly-anticipated championship will make its debut in 2014 and aims to draw Formula 1 teams, electric car companies and global brands into the sport.

Formula E cars will reach a top speed of 220km/h, with drivers forced to pit for a new car halfway into the race, yes a new car, because the lithium batteries only last for 25 minutes on a single charge.

Lucas di Grassi will be developing the cars which are expected to be raced on different street circuits in an array of world-famous cities such as Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro and Germany’s capital Berlin.
