Dakar Rally 2015 – Stage 2: Al-Attiyah back in the lead

January 5, 2015 – After a stage victory yesterday followed by a penalty for exceeding speed limits, Nasser Al-Attiyah has done it again on the second special of the Dakar 2015 by distancing his closest rivals by more than eight minutes, more than enough to take control of the general standings.

Toyota driver Giniel De Villiers was best of the rest, finishing the 518-kilometer stage in second place and moving to the runner-up spot in the general standings ahead of Bernhard ten Brinke in a similar Toyota.

In the bikes category, Honda’s Joan Barreda took a commanding stage victory, finishing 6 minutes clear of fellow Honda rider Paulo Goncalves. This promoted Barreda to the overall lead, while yesterday’s stage winner KTM’s Sam Sunderland got lost for over two hours and dropped to 63rd overall.

Sonik Rafal moved to the Quads category lead after setting the quickest time today, which demoted yesterday’s leader Ignacio Casale to second place overall, more than 2 minutes behind.
