January 11, 2016 – Nasser Al-Attiyah took his first stage victory in the 2016 Dakar Rally after setting the quickest time in the eighth special stage today, whilst Sebastien Loeb – who had already hit trouble when he got stuck in a dune – rolled his Peugeot and gave up his lead as a result.

Al-Attiyah moved to third place overall after his stage win and Loeb’s retirement, whilst Stephane Peterhansel, who finished third fastest – 31 seconds slower than Al-Attiyah – inherited the overall lead; his Peugeot teammate Carlos Sainz was second fastest – 12 seconds behind the fastest man – and moved to second place overall.
Mikko Hirvonen and Leeroy Poulter occupy fourth and fifth places overall, as Saudi Arabia’s Yazeed Al Rajhi moved to sixth place overall in the Toyota Hilux ahead of teammate Giniel de Villiers and Sebastien Loeb – who’s now 8th overall – respectively.
