October 2, 2015 – Toyota Motosport has announced that its GT86 CS-R3 rally car has been successfully granted FIA homologation, which makes it the first homologated rear-wheel drive in the 21st century.
The new GT86 CS-R3 is the first rear-wheel drive car in the previously-exclusive front-wheel drive R3 category and it will be eligible to compete in any rally which runs to FIA regulations, including the World Rally Championship.
Powering the GT86 CS-R3 is a two-litre, normally-aspirated boxer engine that produces a maximum power of 232hp, and peak torque of 235Nm; the engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission from gearbox specialists Drenth designed specifically for rear-wheel-drive cars, and the car is equipped with a limited slip rear differential.
The CS-R3 is intended for private customers and will be sold in kit form for €84,000/$93,750 (excluding VAT), including complete chassis and powertrain.
