2012 Belgian Grand Prix qualifying results: Button grabs surprise pole

Jenson Button took a surprising pole position during qualifying for tomorrow’s Belgian Grand Prix. Despite complaining of understeer earlier in the session, Button clocked a 1:47.573 to secure the top spot.

Another surprise was Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi who qualified high up in second place, ahead of Williams’ Pastor Maldonado, while pole favorite Kimi Raikkonen settled for fourth.

Kobayashi’s teammate Sergio Perez ensured two top 5 positions for his Sauber team as he went fifth quickest, followed by Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari and Mark Webber, who’s dropping five places tomorrow, in the Red Bull.

Lewis Hamilton qualified a low eighth position, with Lotus’ Romain Grosjean and Force India’s Paul Di Resta completing the top 10. Sebastian Vettel meanwhile couldn’t make it into Q3 and ended up 11th.
