Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton secured his fifth victory of the season in his home Grand Prix in Great Britain in a chaotic race that witnessed a 1-hour red flag following a heavy crash for Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, while championship leader Nico Rosberg retired with gearbox issues.
Hamilton made a great start from P6, overtaking Hulkenberg and then Vettel to climb to P4, but the race was stopped when Kimi Raikkonen crashed his Ferrari, causing damage to the barriers on the Wellington Straight. It took almost 1 hour to repair the barriers and resume the race.
Gearbox trouble for Nico Rosberg mid-race saw Hamilton cruise to victory, to finish 30 seconds ahead of the impressive Bottas who made his way up to second place after starting from 14th. Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the podium, followed by McLaren’s Jenson Button.
Sebastian Vettel finished fifth after a superb battle with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso who settled for sixth place.
