March 20, 2016 – Nico Rosberg triumphed in the opening round of the 2016 Formula 1 world championship in Australia in a thrilling race that was interrupted by a red flag caused by a heavy collision between McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Haas’ Esteban Gutierrez, of which both escaped unscathed.

Rosberg dropped from second to third on the start, whilst pole-sitter and team-mate Lewis Hamilton made a poor start and was sixth by the end of the first lap as the two Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen placed first and second respectively.
However, Rosberg benefited from a one-stop strategy to overcome Vettel and eventually win the race, and Hamilton made the same strategy work to finish second.
Vettel settled for third place as team-mate Kimi Raikkonen retired with a mechanical failure. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth, Felipe Massa rounded out the top 5, while Romain Grosjean gave Haas their first ever Formula 1 points by crossing the finish line in sixth.
