Todd Willing, the designer behind the 2017 Ford GT, is now Ford’s global head of design, bringing over 20 years of experience to the role.
Ford has named Todd Willing as its new global head of design, following the departure of Anthony Lo in May. Willing, who has been with Ford for 20 years, succeeds Lo, who had taken over from Moray Callum after Callum’s retirement in 2021. Willing will now oversee the design direction for Ford and Lincoln vehicles worldwide.
A long-time Ford veteran, Willing joined the company in 2003 and has steadily risen through the ranks. Before his promotion, he served as the global design director for Ford Model e, the company’s electric vehicle division. Willing’s journey in design began in high school through a work experience program at Ford’s Australian design studio. Over the years, he has worked in various locations, including Japan, Germany, England, and the U.S., and he led the Ford Asia-Pacific design studio in Melbourne, Australia.
Throughout his career, Willing has played a significant role in designing several iconic Ford vehicles. He contributed to the designs of mainstream models such as the 2007 Mondeo, sixth-generation Fiesta, and third-generation Focus. Notably, he served as the exterior chief designer for the striking 2017 Ford GT supercar. Willing also led the design teams responsible for Ford’s trucks and SUVs, including the F-150, Super Duty, Bronco, Ranger, Maverick, Expedition, and Explorer.
Willing’s promotion to global head of design took effect on August 27, and while it may take a few years to see the impact of his leadership on new vehicle designs, his extensive experience and vision are expected to shape the future of Ford’s global lineup.
