The 2027 Scout Traveler blends classic 4×4 design with electric innovation, offering off-road power, style, and up to 500 miles of range.
Volkswagen has unveiled the first look at its revived Scout brand, and it’s packed with excitement. After acquiring the rights to Scout, Volkswagen has launched Scout Motors to produce American-made electric trucks and SUVs. The first model, the Scout Traveler, is a nod to the classic International-Harvester Scout, but with modern tech and electric power. This SUV promises adventure with improved performance, zero emissions, and refined features.
The original International-Harvester Scout was a rugged utility vehicle made between 1961 and 1980. Though durable, it had some drawbacks, like poor rustproofing, but its legacy lives on, and restored models are highly valued today. Scout Motors has paid tribute to this icon with the Traveler’s design, resembling the larger Scout II model introduced in 1971. This “production-ready concept” features retro details like rear side windows, a two-piece tailgate, and a long hood that houses a frunk, complete with power outlets.
Inside, the Traveler mixes vintage charm with modern technology. The bright, retro-inspired interior features a dash reminiscent of the 1970s Scout II, complete with a ribbon-style speedometer on the driver’s screen. Scout Motors adds a tactile experience, with mechanical door handles, knobs, and switches for various functions. While it won’t have the removable roof of the original, the Traveler will offer a panoramic sunroof and an open-air Cabana Top option.
Built on a rugged body-on-frame structure with a live rear axle, the Scout Traveler’s all-electric powertrain promises serious performance. While specifics on horsepower are not disclosed, Scout Motors states that the Traveler will generate nearly 1,000 lb-ft of torque, reach 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, and have a payload capacity of one ton, with a towing capacity exceeding 7,000 pounds. The off-road package includes locking front and rear differentials, sway bar disconnect, and 35-inch tires, ensuring the Traveler is ready for any terrain.
The all-electric Traveler is expected to deliver up to 350 miles of range, with an optional gasoline-powered range extender, called the Harvester, boosting total range to 500 miles. The vehicle will feature an 800-volt architecture for fast DC charging, allowing up to 350 kW charging speeds, and it will support bi-directional charging.
