Petter Solberg says this week’s Rally GB offers him his best chance yet of ending his six-year run without a World Rally Championship victory.
A win in Wales would make Solberg the most successful driver ever on Britain’s round of the WRC. Having won the rally four times, he currently shares that status with Hannu Mikkola.
The Norwegian tested his Citroen DS3 WRC for a day last week and said he was delighted with the way the car was running.
“I feel very good before this event,” said the 2003 world champion. “The car is running really well, the engine is working better than ever; we have some different mapping which is definitely helping.
“This is a good chance [to win], we have been close many times since the last win [in 2005].”
Solberg dominated Rally GB between 2002 and 2005 and admits he feels at home on the event.
“I like this rally,” he said. “I have good memories here. I don’t care about the weather, if it’s raining and muddy, I don’t care, it’s the same for everybody. I want to go and make a good result.”
Rally GB starts on Thursday afternoon, with two runs around the Great Orme stage and one run through the Clocaenog forest test.
