Land Rover’s New Defender to be more modern

In an interview with Autocar magazine, Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s design director, said that the new Defender can be a smash-hit for the British brand, in similar fashion to the Evoque.

The Defender has been around for six decades, and Land Rover realizes that a replacement for the legendary off-road utility vehicle is long overdue, which is why a successor – based on the DC100 Concept – is in the company’s pipeline.

McGovern said that the new Defender will feature a more contemporary design, while retaining the current vehicle’s essence: “A like-for-like replacement for the Defender would not be appropriate and wouldn’t be legal with safety legislation,” he said. “We can still capture the essence of the past but in a modern way.”

“It has to have the essence of the Defender. James Bond needs to be able to kick the hell out of it and it will still be able to get up for more.” he added.
