FIA president Jean Todt has suggested he will seek to renegotiate the governing body’s deal with Formula 1 bosses over commercial rights.
In 2001, the sport’s ruling body approved a 100-year deal with Bernie Ecclestone’s SLEC Trust for the broadcasting and other commercial rights to Formula 1.
The deal was brokered under the presidency of Max Mosley.
Todt, the FIA president since 2009, said this week that he will make sure the FIA gets a fair deal since “times have changed.”
“I will make sure that everybody realises that since the agreement was signed, times have changed,” Todt told the Financial Times in an interview.
“Technology has changed. Evolution has a price. I must make sure that the funding for the FIA is correct.”
The Frenchman’s comments come ahead of negotiations to renew the Concorde Agreement, thee commercial contract which governs the championship.
Todt, whose governing body was slammed as a “joke” by Ecclestone last month, refused to be drawn into a war of words with the F1 supremo.
“It is important not to overreact,” he said. “I feel with confrontation, unless it is necessary to achieve a result, you lose time. I prefer to achieve results with harmony rather than confrontation.”
