On the basis of the renewed technical platform of the Vespa GTS comes two special versions at the top of the range with a slew of standard equipment which includes ABS and ASR safety systems: these are Vespa GTS Touring and Vespa GTS SuperSport.
The Sport Special Edition of the Vespa embodies as always the typical Vespa values of style, comfort, safety and outstanding sportiness while citing legendary models of the past sports such as the 1955 Vespa GS 150, the 1965 Vespa 180 SS and the 1985 T5 “Pole Position”.
The new Vespa GTS Touring represents the Vespa’s vocation to touring. Millions of Vespa, equipped for tourism, have always travelled the roads of the world giving generations the opportunity to know each other, expanding their borders and encountering different cultures.
The new Vespa GTS SuperSport
On the basis of the new Vespa GTS Super comes the model SuperSport, the most aggressive Vespa of the large scooter family that is the most popular in the world, that meld together drive, attitude and performance. Its sporting extraction is made evident by the ’exclusive black matte painting and special features such as the seat with all-new stitching, characterised by orange-thread finish. The side decals are also of the same colour, and as always the steel logo applied on the shield and the letter “S” that stands out on the front shield.
The new Vespa GTS Touring
On the technical basis of the new Vespa GTS comes the all new Touring model Touring, vehicle of great stylistic impact that draws from the mythology of Vespa travel, and ready to face all journeys whether city or country. The new Vespa GTS Touring is characterised by the evocative windscreen that improves protection without affecting – thanks to its small size – the elegance, while the front and rear storage compartments along with the increased capacity of the under-seat compartment, provide excellent load capacity to tackle memorable holidays, alone or in company. Touring proposes a dedicated logo positioned on the leg shield back plate and exclusive colour variation Sienna brown, that matches the seat of the same tint.
A step forward for technology
The Piaggio Group is the first manufacturer to introduce scooter ASR electronic traction control, once available only on the best motorcycles, which prevents wheelspin. The electronic control package is rounded-off by the ABS, anti-braking system. Both are standard features of the Vespa GTS Touring and GTS SuperSport.
The technical equipment also provides for the adoption of the new ESS front suspension, successfully introduced on the Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint. While maintaining the classic single-arm front suspension with push pin clutch, typical of Vespa tradition, the new range of Vespa GTS adopts a completely redesigned system able to halve the sliding friction. The shock absorber is now fixed to the aluminium support that connects it to the wheel via a hinged pin, whereas before it was fixed with two screws. Increasing the fluidity of the suspension also improves ride comfort and absorption capacity of the road imperfections, which avoids kickback to the driver, providing a smooth, relaxed and safe ride.
For the first time ever the new range of Vespa GTS features the sophisticated Vespa Multimedia Platform that allows smartphone connection to the on-board electronic system to transform it into a multi-function tool, a full-fledged complex computer able to simultaneously display information such as tachometer, rev meter, and also instantaneous engine power and torque, longitudinal acceleration, instant and average fuel consumption, average speed and battery voltage and much more. The smartphone connected to the Vespa Multimedia Platform also makes it possible to display maps and routes as well as identify petrol stations and Service Stations. The tyre condition control function synergistically exploits the vehicle sensors and smartphone to monitor tyre wear and inflation, warning the user immediately prior to the occurrence of potentially critical situations; while the general analysis function allows overall vehicle condition check.
Engines
Vespa GTS Touring and Vespa GTS SuperSport come with a 300 cc modern and advanced 4 valve x 4 stroke single cylinder engine with electronic injection, able to provide a maximum output of 22 HP at 7,500 rev/min with maximum torque of 22.3 Nm at only 5,000 rev/min. Values that ensure heightened acceleration readiness and in general extremely brilliant performance, making the new larger body Vespa ideal vehicles for city roads and touring, even long range travels, in full comfort whether alone or with a passenger.
Vespa GTS SuperSport ia also available with a 125 cc engine, for those only having a standard driver’s license. Vespa made its first 125 cc engine as far back as 1948. This was the unit that powered the Vespas immortalised by the classic film Roman Holiday, ridden by Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Obviously, at over 60 years in the future, engine technology has come a long way. The 125cc single-cylinder engine that drives the new Vespa GTS SuperSport is a modern engine with electronic fuel injection, 4-strokes, 4-valves, capable of providing an outstanding rideability while reducing maintenance costs requiring low maintenance at every 10,000 km.
