Thierry Neuville took a maiden World Rally Championship victory in Rally Germany this afternoon in a chaotic final day that saw previous leaders Jari-Matti Latvala and Kris Meeke crash out.
Latvala had a 56-second lead going into the final day but took his Volkswagen off the road on Sunday’s opening stage (SS15), thus handing Citroen’s Kris Meeke the lead. However, Meeke soon followed suit, crashing his DS3 on the day’s second stage (SS16).
The drama meant that Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville was the new leader followed by his teammate Dani Sordo with two stages to go. Neuville safely got his i20 WRC till the end, claiming his and Hyundai’s first ever WRC victory, and to top it all off, Sordo finished second – a Hyundai 1-2.
Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen settled for third place overall, followed by the impressive Elfyn Evans who managed to move past his M-Sport Ford teammate Mikko Hirvonen to take fourth place, while the latter finished fifth.
