The new V6 turbocharged engines have not been popular with Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who is now pushing for a return to the V8s or V10s in the near future.
Ecclestone, 84 years old, revealed to a select group of reporters on Thursday that he intends to propose the loud “normally-aspirated” engines for 2016 during the December 18 meeting of the powerful Strategy Group.
“It’s up to them”, Ecclestone answered when asked whether he is contemplating V8s or V10s, referring to the manufacturers.
Ecclestone said that the 2016 engines would be branded as “Hybrid” and feature KERS systems, and he played down suggestions carmakers like Honda and Mercedes will walk away by insisting it would actually be “a bit of a dream for them to build a normally-aspirated engine and develop it to about 1000 horsepower”.
