Fiat to enter the WRC in 2017?

November 23, 2015 – With the introduction of the new 124 Spider road car (pictured below), Fiat is now planning a return to the World Rally Championship in 2017 with its Abarth division, according to the latest rumors.

PistonHeads claims that “a source close to the tuning company” told them an Abarth version of the new Mazda MX-5-based Fiat 124 will enter the WRC in 2017 to compete in a new sports car category.

Fiat is no stranger to the world of rallying as it was seriously involved in the WRC in the 1970s and early 1980s; it won the World Rally Championship constructors’ title three times in 1977, 1978 and 1980 with the Fiat 131 Abarth.

Fiat currently competes on a national level with Abarth-tuned 500 and Punto models.
