April 24, 2016 – Hyundai’s Hayden Paddon secured his maiden World Rally Championship victory in Argentina today after fending off late pressure from Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier.
Paddon was 30 seconds ahead of Ogier going into the final day, but lost 8 seconds to the Frenchman on Sunday’s opening stage (SS16), and 20 seconds in the following stage (SS17). The pair were separated by just 2 seconds before the start of the final stage, during which Paddon fought back and won to finish the event 14 seconds ahead of Ogier.
Andreas Mikkelsen settled for third overall in the Volkswagen, while Hyundai’s Dani Sordo took fourth overall, followed by M-Sport Ford’s Mads Ostberg who rounded out the top 5.
Jari-Matti Latvala, who crashed yesterday and returned for today’s action, stopped on the power stage for repairs to his damaged Volkswagen and was able to continue.
