Nasser Al-Attiyah could contest 6 WRC events with Volkswagen

May 9, 2016 – 11-time Middle East Rally Champion Nasser Al-Attiyah revealed that he could join Volkswagen Motorsport’s WRC team this year as talks are being held between the two parties.

The two-time Dakar Rally winner competed in the WRC in 2012 and 2013, taking a best finish of 4th in Rally Portugal, before securing the WRC 2 titles in 2014 and 2015 with seven victories over the two seasons.

“I’ve spoken to Volkswagen, regarding a drive in the Polo R WRC car under their management,” revealed Al-Attiyah to Motorsport.com. “I want to race with its second team, which includes Andreas Mikkelsen. If I get the approval, I’ll start competing from Rally Germany and will do six rounds, until the end of the season. And if I don’t get the green light, then, I won’t be interested in competing in WRC2, as I’ll keep the budget that I have for next year.”

Al-Attiyah is not defending his WRC 2 title this year as he will be busy with preparations for the men’s skeet competition in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
