The Citroën SM Tribute, now branded as DS, showcases a retro-futuristic design with modern updates. No production plans, but it’s a striking concept.
The iconic Citroën SM is making a comeback, but with a twist. Now badged as a DS model, the SM Tribute celebrates a decade of DS Automobiles as an independent brand under Stellantis, following the FCA-PSA merger in 2021.
This unique concept car, inspired by the original SM from the 1970s, features a retro-futuristic design as if the model had evolved over five decades. Instead of the classic glass panel, the SM Tribute sports a modern 3D screen light bar. The tribute’s sleek LED strips replace the original’s swiveling headlights.
The SM Tribute is notably larger than its predecessor, measuring 1.1 inches longer and 5.5 inches wider, with a lower ground clearance for better aerodynamics. It rides on impressive 22-inch wheels with aero covers, a nod to the removable wheel spats of the 1970s model. Modern touches include camera side mirrors for improved airflow and a Gold Leaf paint job that recalls the classic SM’s distinctive style.
While the interior of the SM Tribute shows only a slight resemblance to the original, it features a futuristic cabin with minimal physical controls and numerous screens. The concept’s powertrain remains undisclosed, but it is speculated to be an electric vehicle, aligning with Stellantis’ investment in EVs.
Despite its innovative design, there are no plans to put the SM Tribute into production. DS Automobiles, part of Stellantis, faces scrutiny over its profitability, with CEO Carlos Tavares emphasizing that unprofitable brands may face shutdowns.
