McMurtry Spéirling Becomes First Car to Drive Upside Down
Believe it—this isn’t a stunt or a hoax. The revolutionary McMurtry Spéirling has become the first car ever to drive upside down, proving that extreme downforce and cutting-edge engineering can defy more than just expectations.
Known for obliterating Top Gear’s long-standing lap record, the all-electric, 1,000bhp Spéirling took things to the next level—literally. Thanks to its fan-powered “downforce-on-demand” system, capable of producing up to 2,000kg of downforce even at low speeds, McMurtry achieved what was once thought impossible: true inverted driving.
The feat happened on a custom-built rotating rig, designed specifically to showcase this mind-bending capability. McMurtry’s managing director, Thomas Yates, piloted the car up a ramp and onto the rotating platform, which flipped the Spéirling completely upside down. And it stayed there—no supports, no trickery, just pure suction-based grip.
“Driving while inverted was completely surreal,” Yates said. “This demonstration is just the start of what’s possible with this technology.”
While the current rig was a controlled environment, the company believes longer inverted tracks or even tunnels could allow extended upside-down driving. It’s a groundbreaking proof of concept that opens the door to futuristic motorsport innovations.
