BMW Motorsport has unveiled its latest customer racing weapon: the BMW M2 Racing, a track-focused machine that echoes the legacy of the original M3 with a surprising twist under the hood.
Unlike the road-going M2, which packs a 453-hp inline-six, the M2 Racing features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 313 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Derived from BMW’s proven B48 engine family, this powertrain may have fewer cylinders but delivers serious performance, especially when paired with the familiar ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and a mechanical locking rear differential.
Weighing roughly 3,300 pounds—significantly lighter than the street version—the M2 Racing offers an ideal power-to-weight ratio for club racers and aspiring professionals. The lightweight chassis is race-prepped with a FIA-compliant safety cage, fire suppression system, carbon-fiber roof, aerodynamic upgrades, brake cooling, and 18-inch forged wheels.
Every unit comes in Alpine White, providing a blank canvas for liveries and sponsors. Additional options include a passenger seat, air jack system, rear wing, ballast box, and Sabelt GT-Pro race seat package.
Importantly, this car marks a return to BMW’s roots. The original E30 M3—an icon in touring car racing—was also powered by a high-revving four-cylinder. With this new M2 Racing, BMW once again prioritizes lightweight dynamics and driver engagement over raw cylinder count.
For those building a private racing program, BMW’s turnkey M2 Racing offers a factory-engineered solution with motorsport pedigree—ready to hit the grid straight out of the box.
