Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV Debuts With 402 Horsepower

Nissan has revealed the new Frontier Pro PHEV, a powerful and unexpected addition to its global pickup lineup. First launched in China through its partnership with Dongfeng, this hybrid truck is set to expand into other international markets—though Nissan hasn’t confirmed which just yet.

Beneath its rugged exterior, the Frontier Pro packs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with a gearbox-mounted electric motor, producing 402 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. This makes it the most powerful version of the Frontier yet—and also Nissan’s first-ever plug-in hybrid truck.

The hybrid system offers an impressive 84 miles of electric-only range, according to Zhengzhou Nissan. It also features all-wheel drivefive-link rear suspension, and an electromechanical rear differential lock. Practical upgrades include a V2L port for powering tools or gear, and an electronic roll-top bed cover.

Design cues pay tribute to the 1980s D21 Hardbody pickup, with bold LED lighting and aggressive bodywork borrowed from the Nissan Dongfeng Z9. Inside, the Frontier Pro offers seating for five, a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, a 10-inch LCD instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and optional heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats.

Deliveries in China are expected to begin by year’s end, with international availability to follow. With specs like these, the Frontier Pro could rival the Ford Ranger Raptor, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max—even outperforming some in straight-line speed. Expect more news as Nissan confirms its global rollout strategy.
