Alpine F1 has announced major changes ahead of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Rising Argentine talent Franco Colapinto will step in for Jack Doohan for the next five races, while Flavio Briatore returns to a leadership role following team principal Oliver Oakes’ resignation.
Colapinto, previously serving as Alpine’s reserve driver since leaving Williams last summer, will now partner Pierre Gasly through the next phase of the season. The team confirmed that Doohan, who has yet to score a point in his six starts, will revert to his previous role as Alpine’s primary reserve driver. An evaluation will take place ahead of the British Grand Prix to determine the next steps.
Meanwhile, Briatore, once banned from Formula 1 due to his involvement in the 2008 “Crashgate” scandal, is back at Alpine. Although officially still titled “Executive Advisor,” Alpine stated he will assume the responsibilities vacated by Oakes, who was in the role for less than a year. Briatore’s ban was lifted in 2010, allowing his return to F1 after 2012.
Briatore explained the decision by emphasizing the need for a comprehensive assessment of the team’s driver lineup ahead of the crucial 2026 season. He praised Doohan’s professionalism but noted the close competition on the grid and the importance of making the most of a now more competitive car.
The next five races will serve as a key evaluation period as Alpine explores its long-term options in a bid to strengthen its position in the championship.
