Watch: F1 Unveils Colorized Footage of First Grand Prix

Start of the 1950 Grand Prix at Silverstone

Formula 1 has released restored, colorized footage of the 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone to celebrate 75 years since the sport’s inaugural race. First held on 13 May 1950, this historic event is now vividly brought back to life using advanced AI, reference photography, and manual colorization techniques.

The newly released video, created by British Pathé, captures the charm and raw atmosphere of early Formula 1. Giuseppe Farina claimed victory in his Alfa Romeo 158, followed by Luigi Fagioli and Reg Parnell. Pole-sitter Juan Manuel Fangio retired after 62 of 70 laps. King George VI was in attendance, adding a royal touch to the landmark occasion.

The footage reveals a stripped-back era of racing—hay bales as barriers, hand-signaled pit stops, and wide-open paddocks. The AI-enhanced visuals focus on realistic colors for skies, grass, cars, and even driver expressions, all verified using archival materials to ensure authenticity.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali reflected on the moment: “Seventy-five years ago, our sport was born. Today, we honor the courage and legacy of those original racers.”

This release offers fans a unique, immersive look into the origins of Formula 1, just in time for the 2025 British Grand Prix conversation to begin. Many are now calling for a throwback Pathé-style commentary to match the era.

Watch the restored footage online and relive the birth of F1 racing—an unforgettable tribute to the sport’s roots and its enduring legacy on the global stage.
