Yuki Tsunoda will drive the iconic 1965 Honda RA272 during the Mexico Grand Prix on October 26 to celebrate 60 years since Honda’s first Formula 1 win. This rare demonstration will take place at one of Honda’s most historic tracks where it first made F1 history.
Tsunoda, the only Japanese driver currently in Formula 1, is a perfect fit for this tribute. Every F1 point in his career has come while racing with Honda-powered teams such as AlphaTauri, Red Bull and Racing Bulls. He is also a major fan favorite in Japan, attracting massive crowds at his home Grand Prix in Suzuka.
The Honda RA272 was a game-changer when it made its debut. It featured a 1.5-liter V12 engine capable of reaching 14000 rpm and was the most powerful car on the grid at the time. Unlike modern F1 cars, it had a simple yet elegant design that still captivates racing fans around the world.
In the 1965 Mexico Grand Prix, California-born driver Richie Ginther piloted the RA272 to Honda’s first ever F1 victory. He overtook legends like Jim Clark and Dan Gurney right at the start and never gave up the lead. It was also the first Formula 1 win for any Japanese manufacturer.
This demonstration honors Honda’s 60 years in F1, a journey that includes legendary cars like the McLaren MP4/6 driven by Ayrton Senna and the Red Bull RB20 from Max Verstappen’s dominant 2024 season.
In Japan, turning 60 is known as kanreki, symbolizing both reflection and renewal. With Honda set to supply engines for Aston Martin in 2026, this event serves as a special moment for fans and a fitting farewell for Tsunoda’s current chapter with Honda.
