Kalle Rovanperä Eyes Formula 1 After WRC Exit

Rally Champion Charts New Course Toward Single-Seater Stardom

Kalle Rovanperä, the reigning World Rally Champion, has revealed his bold ambition to transition into Formula 1 — aiming to become the first WRC title-winner to compete in the world’s premier single-seater series. The Finnish star has announced plans to leave full-time rallying at the end of the 2025 season and switch to circuit racing, starting with Japan’s highly competitive Super Formula championship in 2026.

“Time Is Ticking” — Rovanperä Makes His Move

At just 25 years old, Rovanperä believes now is the right moment to take on a new challenge.

“Time is definitely ticking all the time, but it’s still on my side,” he said. “That’s why the decision had to be made now.”

He emphasized the critical role that Toyota has played in supporting his career shift.

“A big thanks goes to Toyota, who wanted to back me on this journey. Without manufacturer support, a plan like this simply wouldn’t be possible. In circuit racing, most young drivers have that kind of backing, and having Toyota trust me with this project is definitely the coolest part of it all.”

The Roadmap: From Super Formula to Formula 2

Rovanperä’s immediate plan is to compete in Super Formula, which has gained international recognition for its competitiveness and close connection to Formula 1. If all goes well, the next step would be a move into Formula 2, F1’s official feeder series.

“We’re aiming really high. Everything depends on how things go, and we’ll work hard to see what we can achieve. Motorsport is unpredictable — you need to be in the right place at the right time and have a bit of luck on your side.”

Still, Rovanperä remains pragmatic and open-minded about the direction his new career may take.

Formula 1 the Dream, But Le Mans Also Beckons

While Formula 1 remains the ultimate target, the Finn isn’t ruling out other top-tier opportunities such as the World Endurance Championship (WEC) or the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Toyota is already a key player.

“At this point, I only know my next few years — Super Formula first, then hopefully Formula 2,” he explained. “Of course, F1 is the highest level, and that’s where we’re aiming. But there are many cool series in circuit racing. If I get the chance to do Le Mans one day, I’ll take it.”

A Taste of F1: Rovanperä’s Red Bull Ring Test

Rovanperä has already had a brief introduction to Formula 1 machinery. In November 2024, he completed 50 laps of the Red Bull Ring in a Red Bull RB8, the championship-winning car from 2012.

“Driving an F1 car was something I had looked forward to for a long time,” he said. “It was amazing to finally experience it. The day went really well, and I was left with very good feelings.”

Rovanperä’s Transition: A Rare and Ambitious Leap

Very few drivers have successfully transitioned from rallying to Formula racing — a discipline that requires vastly different skills and preparation. But Rovanperä, known for his precision, adaptability, and maturity beyond his years, believes he has what it takes.

“We definitely still have time on our side,” he said. “Now is the time to begin this journey. We’re aiming to go all the way.”

Conclusion: A New Chapter Begins

Kalle Rovanperä’s decision marks one of the most ambitious cross-discipline moves in modern motorsport. With the backing of Toyota and a clear development path ahead, the former rally prodigy is determined to make his mark on the global racing stage — with Formula 1 firmly in his sights.
