Ott Tänak has reportedly held discussions with Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala regarding the coveted seat that Kalle Rovanperä will vacate at the end of the 2025 season. The Estonian driver, who has not yet exercised his contract renewal clause with Hyundai, appears to be exploring his options for 2026.
Uncertain Future at Hyundai
While both Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux have already triggered their renewal clauses to remain with Hyundai through 2026, Tänak has chosen to keep his options open. As it stands, he is set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2025 WRC season.
Given his past success with Toyota — including winning the 2019 World Rally Championship title — a return to the Japanese manufacturer would represent both a sentimental and competitive move for Tänak.
Solberg Still in Contention
However, Tänak is not the only name on Toyota’s radar. Oliver Solberg, long considered the natural successor to Rovanperä, remains firmly in the running. When asked about his 2026 prospects, Solberg adopted a cautious tone but made his ambitions clear:
“My goal is to compete in a full season in the WRC,” he said, hinting that discussions are ongoing with all teams — a possible strategic move to increase pressure on Toyota’s management.
Despite the speculation, Solberg confirmed that he has not yet signed a contract for 2026, leaving his future open-ended.
Limited Alternatives for Solberg
A switch to either Hyundai or M-Sport appears unlikely for Solberg, as neither outfit currently seems capable of offering the long-term stability the young driver requires to continue his progression. This narrows his realistic options — with Toyota standing out as the most logical destination.
Toyota Holds the Cards
Ultimately, the decision lies with Toyota. The manufacturer faces an enviable dilemma: whether to recall a proven world champion in Tänak or invest in the promise of youth with Solberg.
Importantly, Toyota is under no immediate pressure to make a decision. The team could even choose to restructure its current driver programs rather than selecting a single replacement outright.
For now, negotiations continue — and the WRC paddock waits eagerly to see whether Tänak’s return or Solberg’s promotion will define Toyota’s next chapter.
