The 2026 Mazda CX-5 continues to set the benchmark for driving dynamics in the compact SUV segment — and much of its refinement comes from lessons learned from the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Even with a slight increase in size, the new Mazda CX-5 feels tighter and more composed than before, thanks to major suspension and chassis upgrades.

Engine Performance and Responsiveness

The CX-5 retains Mazda’s responsive Skyactiv engine lineup, expected to include a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a turbocharged 2.5-liter option. The turbo variant delivers strong low-end torque, providing confident acceleration and smoother highway merging. Paired with a refined automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive, the powertrain balances efficiency with engaging performance.

Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control system further enhances stability by subtly adjusting engine torque during cornering, improving front-end grip and steering precision.

Miata-Inspired Suspension Upgrades

For 2026, Mazda introduced redesigned dampers with a larger piston diameter and improved valve stack, reducing friction and increasing low-speed sensitivity. The new, more linear damping curve provides better body control during small movements while maintaining comfort over rough roads.

Engineers also adopted a Miata-inspired approach: softer springs combined with firmer initial damping. This setup allows the CX-5 to absorb road imperfections smoothly while keeping body roll and float in check.

With improved steering feedback and lightly preloaded all-wheel-drive torque coupling, the 2026 CX-5 delivers a rare mix of comfort, control, and genuine driver engagement proving that sports car DNA can thrive in a family SUV.
