Alfa Romeo 8C Returns With Zagato Design Twist

The iconic Alfa Romeo 8C is back—this time reimagined by renowned Italian coachbuilder Zagato. Called the DoppiaCoda, or “double tail,” the one-off creation is a tribute to both the original 8C’s beauty and Zagato’s legacy in bespoke automotive design.

The DoppiaCoda draws its name and styling inspiration from Zagato’s distinctive tail designs, combining a Kamm-style truncated rear with a rounded, sculptural finish. Built entirely by Zagato for a private Italian collector, the car serves as both a modern concept and a nod to the historic collaborations between Alfa Romeo and Zagato, dating back to the 1930s.

Chief designer Norihiko Harada created a unique rear wing design that appears to float within the body, giving the car a dynamic and futuristic look. This design approach detaches the wing from the body visually, while still integrating it seamlessly from the side profile. The result is what Zagato calls the “wing tronca,” a tailored adaptation of race-inspired tail shapes for a grand tourer.

While the aesthetics are dramatically altered, the mechanical setup is likely unchanged. The front-mounted 444bhp V8 engine from the original 8C is expected to remain, delivering the signature sound and performance that made the car a modern classic.

Zagato positions the DoppiaCoda as the beginning of a new design era—focusing on innovative tail design and aerodynamic exploration. Whether it surpasses the original’s timeless charm is up for debate, but it’s undeniably a striking continuation of the Alfa 8C legacy.
