In May of 1972, BMW gave birth to a very special division that would later shape up the company to what it is now. That division was was the BMW M GmbH. The M stands for Motosports.
In 1974, and after 2 years of its inauguration, BMW M started offering high-performance variants of the normal 5-Series, dubbed the M5. The car had a sportier suspension and a more powerful engine.
The company, with the help of Lamborghini, introduced their first ever super car in 1978, the famous BMW M1. Only a few hundred models were ever built of the production racing car.
After their success in Formula 1 and motor racing, BMW decided to upgrade their 3-Series into a M3. Equipped with a 195hp four-cylinder engine, the car was a major success in touring car racing.
Nowadays, almost every car in BMW’s lineup has a M Performance variant; take the monstrous BMW X6M as an example.
