Dakar Rally: Peterhansel in the lead with Stage 10 victory, Sainz and Al-Attiyah in trouble

January 13, 2016 – Stephane Peterhansel retook the lead of the Dakar Rally after taking the win in the tenth special stage today, while his main rivals Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah faced trouble.

Peterhansel finished the 278-kilometer special stage in 03hr 58min 32sec, 5 minutes and 40 seconds faster than Peugeot teammate Cyril Despres and 13 minutes quicker than Toyota’s Vladimir Vasilyev.

Al-Attiyah rolled his X-Raid MINI (pictured above) just six kilometers into the stage and lost a large chunk of time; he’s second overall but a full hour behind the leader. Meanwhile, Sainz stopped with a broken gearbox case and is out of the event.

Toyota’s Giniel De Villiers lies third overall, followed by Mikko Hirvonen in the MINI and Leeroy Poulter in the Toyota.
