Winter’s here and I thought it would be nice to post something that might help you guys reduce the risk of having an accident in the upcoming windy and rainy conditions so we can all spend a nice safe time.
Always remember that the car’s overall condition is what’s going to dictate its behavior and performance; so make sure you follow this brief check list:
- Make sure your tires are in good conditions and compatible with wet surfaces (winter or all-weather tires). Having old slippery tires will definitely cause loss of grip and control.
- Be aware of the lights flashing on your dash signaling any potential malfunction such as the ABS lights or the vehicle traction control lights (ESP,VDC…). And sometimes the power steering check light.
- Make sure you have good level of water in your windshield wiper reservoir and that your wipers are working correctly and capable of clearing any mud or dust of your windshield to maintain a good road visibility.
- Never wear thick big jackets that can restrict your reflexes while driving. Just be comfy as you drive.
- Always adjust your seat in the highest acceptable level so that you can increase you range of sight specially that in winter times, water or wind can drag many objects into the course of the roads.
- Seatbelt is a must!
- At night or even in unclear foggy weather make sure you turn on your headlights on the lower level. High aimed lights will not show clearly obstacles near the vehicle’s nose and will be harmful to the cars ahead.
And some driving and strategic tips:
- In high winds or in rain, low speed ranges will enhance your car’s grip. So avoid speeding and even go under the speed limit by 15km/h.
- When rain density rises turn on your 4 indicators.
- When surprised by a deep water spot, especially on highways where some shallow road spots create deep water holes, never brake just keep on throttling in a way that you maintain the same RPM as before so that the car momentum keeps you under control of traction and direction.
- If you face any kind of trouble, like a flat tire, pick a safe spot to park in because in foggy or rainy conditions the other drivers will have reduced visibility.
- DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!
Drive safe everyone!
