Karting is accelerating into a new chapter as the FIA has officially approved groundbreaking technical and homologation regulations for Junior and Senior e-karting categories, setting the stage for the global expansion of electric karting events and championships.
Building on the Success of E-Karting Mini
The newly approved regulations expand on the existing e-karting technical framework introduced in October 2023 for the E-Karting Mini category. With these new classes, the FIA reinforces its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and safety in motorsport.
Technical Standards for a Safer and Competitive Platform
The regulations for both Junior and Senior e-karting classes impose a voltage cap of 60V and mandate a central battery position—directly below the steering column. This layout eliminates side-mounted battery packs, promoting better balance and enhanced driver safety.
These decisions follow comprehensive research and testing carried out by the FIA Technical and Safety Departments throughout the past year, spearheaded by the FIA Karting Department.
Homologation and Power Limits Set for Performance and Equality
With the updated regulations, electric drivetrain systems can now be officially homologated by the FIA. The total power output permitted from the Rechargeable Energy Storage System is capped at:
- 23kW for the Junior class
- 28kW for the Senior class
This ensures a level playing field while delivering high-performance racing experiences for young and senior drivers alike.
A Global Boost for E-Karting Competitions
The introduction of Junior and Senior e-karting classes is expected to catalyze a wave of new international competitions, aligning with the FIA’s broader goals for sustainability and global motorsport development.
Akbar Ebrahim, President of the FIA Karting Commission, expressed optimism about the future:
“E-karting presents a significant opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of global karting, and these regulations will unlock fresh possibilities for events and championships around the world. With the launch of new e-karting classes, the inaugural Arrive and Drive Continental Championships, and the largest FIA Karting calendar to date, 2026 is shaping up to be a golden year for karting.”
Driving Toward a Greener Motorsport Future
E-karting stands as a dynamic and eco-conscious racing discipline. As the FIA continues to incorporate sustainable energy sources into its portfolio of championships, the latest regulations underscore the governing body’s proactive stance on shaping the future of motorsport—one electric lap at a time.
