Ferrari celebrated Carlos Sainz Jr’s departure with a special Fiorano track session, where he and his rally legend father drove F1-75s and a classic 735 LM.
Ferrari has bid an emotional farewell to Carlos Sainz Jr as the Spaniard prepares to join Williams after four seasons with the iconic Scuderia. In a unique gesture, Ferrari made the occasion a family affair by allowing Sainz Jr and his father, rally legend Carlos Sainz Sr, to share the track at Fiorano.
Rather than opting for a conventional farewell gift, Ferrari rolled out two 2022 F1-75 cars, letting father and son experience a once-in-a-lifetime drive together. The event took place on Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit, with Sainz Sr getting a few solo laps to acclimate before his son joined him for parade laps in formation.
Carlos Sainz Sr, renowned for his rally raid exploits, impressed onlookers by quickly adapting to the Formula 1 car despite an early spin. According to Ferrari, the 62-year-old soon found his rhythm, completing consistent laps—a testament to his enduring racing talent.
Following their F1 session, the Sainz duo had the privilege of driving the historic Ferrari 735 LM. Built in 1955, this classic race car has a storied legacy, including competing at the Mille Miglia with Piero Taruffi and at Le Mans with Harry Schell and Maurice Trintignant. The 735 LM’s significance was a fitting tribute to Sainz Jr, as its history aligns perfectly with his race number.
Ferrari’s heartfelt send-off reflects the close bond formed during Sainz Jr’s tenure with the team and underscores the brand’s appreciation for his contributions. While Sainz Jr moves on to a new chapter with Williams, this unforgettable family experience at Fiorano will remain a cherished memory for both father and son.
As the F1-75s roared around the circuit, it’s easy to imagine a playful rivalry brewing—proof that, for the Sainz family, racing is more than just a career; it’s a legacy.
