The FIA is well aware that the Monaco Grand Prix, while a staple of glitz and glamour, often falls flat in terms of thrilling on-track action. After the 2024 race, which saw Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton call the event “boring,” the FIA is stepping in with a plan to add more excitement. The race, notorious for its difficulty in overtaking, saw little change in the top 10 positions, with all drivers finishing exactly where they started.
To spice things up, the FIA World Motor Sport Council has approved a proposal for a mandatory two-stop strategy at the Monaco GP. This rule will apply under both dry and wet conditions. Additionally, the Monaco GP will now require the use of at least three sets of tyres, with a mandate for teams to use two different compounds during a dry race.
The intention behind these changes is to make the event more dynamic, particularly by creating more opportunities for pitstop strategy and potential errors. This move aims to bring added drama to a race known for its limited overtaking opportunities. While some may view it as a gimmick, the FIA’s hope is that the increased pitstops will lead to more unpredictable racing.
Will this new rule bring the Monaco GP to life, or will it remain a spectacle of luxury with little on-track excitement? Only time will tell.
