Dirk Müller drives the Mustang GTD to a sub-7-minute Nürburgring lap, narrating his experience and insights on tackling the Green Hell.
Ford Mustang GTD Smashes Nürburgring Lap Time with Expert Insights
The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD has officially joined the exclusive sub-seven-minute club at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, clocking an impressive 6:57.685. This achievement makes the 815-horsepower powerhouse the first American car to conquer the legendary 12.94-mile German circuit in under seven minutes.
At the wheel was Ford’s factory GT3 driver, Dirk Müller, a seasoned Nürburgring expert. In Ford’s recently released YouTube video, Müller provides a turn-by-turn narration of his August 7, 2024, lap, sharing an insider’s perspective on mastering the world’s most demanding racetrack—dubbed the Green Hell.
In the 10-minute breakdown, Müller details his strategies, including precise racing lines, ideal braking zones, and his approach to the track’s iconic sections. When discussing the famous Carousel corner, he reveals a critical tactic: maintaining a low line longer to preserve momentum and applying power early on exit. His insights highlight the delicate balance between precision and aggression required to excel on this unforgiving circuit.
Despite achieving their goal of a sub-seven-minute lap, Müller and the Ford team contend that the Mustang GTD has more potential. Only three laps were completed under less-than-ideal conditions, and they believe the car is capable of an even faster time. However, the Mustang GTD still trails the current production car lap records, including the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (6:49.328) and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (6:48.047). Leading the pack is the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Performance with a time of 6:43.300.
Ford remains determined to challenge the European dominance. With unfinished business on the Nürburgring, the team plans to return in 2025 to push the boundaries further and aim for an even quicker lap time.
