March 15, 2015 – Lewis Hamilton kicked off his world championship title defense in style as he won the opening round of the 2015 Formula 1 world championship in Australia today.
The pole-sitting Hamilton controlled the race from start to finish to beat his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg who was never able to mount a serious challenge for the race lead.
Sebastian Vettel began his Ferrari career with a podium as he beat the Williams of Felipe Massa to third place, with the Brazilian finishing fourth, less than 4 seconds behind.
Felipe Nasr made a brilliant start to his Formula 1 career as he finished fifth in the improved Sauber, while Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo ended up sixth ahead of Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and the second Sauber of Marcus Ericsson.
Rookie Carlos Sainz scored points on his debut as he crossed the finish line in ninth place, with Force India’s Sergio Perez tenth and McLaren’s Jenson Button eleventh.
Lotus had a disappointing start to the season, with Pastor Maldonado ending up in the barriers as Nasr’s Sauber nudged his Lotus at the start of the race.
