Czech Skoda factory driver Jan Kopecky takes his first win of the 2012 IRC championship after battling over the course of the rally with last year’s champion Adreas Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen was in the lead ahead of the last stage hoping to win his first ever tarmac event, but he was not fortune enough when hi Skoda UK Fabia developed a misfire which made him settle for second. Nevertheless Mikkelsen maintains his lead in the IRC championship with 43 points after he won the last event in Portugal. Taking a 3.6-second lead into the final stage was not enough for Mikkelsen who looked a bit disappointed after the finish line. The misfire also cost Mikkelsen a halt of his IRC winning streak dating from last year but his championship hopes remain high with valuable points collected from this event.
Event promoter and 1991/’94 Canarias winner Luis Monzon secured an impressive third place in his Peugeot 207, comfortably ahead of Sepp Wiegand (Skoda Deutschland).
UAE driver Rashed Al Ketbi finished the event 10th an impressive result on his outing in Spain’s asphalt roads.
