Lando Norris showcases his modified 1973 Plymouth Barracuda at the U.S. Grand Prix, blending classic muscle with modern performance upgrades.
Lando Norris stunned fans at the U.S. Grand Prix, arriving in a striking Papaya Orange 1973 Plymouth Barracuda, showcasing a blend of vintage style and modern performance. While the color matches McLaren’s signature hue, this isn’t one of their supercars but a classic American muscle car outfitted with aftermarket upgrades.
Norris, currently sitting second in the F1 standings after his recent Singapore victory, will make a grand entrance to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin with his roaring Barracuda, thanks to a collaboration between the McLaren F1 team and eBay. The car, boasting a powerful 340-cubic-inch V-8 engine, reflects Norris’ foray into American muscle, a departure from his usual supercars like the Lamborghini Miura and Porsche Carrera GT.
American muscle is new to me, but I’ve always wanted to try something that feels authentic to the culture, Norris said. I’m used to sleek race cars, and this is the opposite in the best way.
McLaren formed a partnership with eBay earlier this year, and the Barracuda was sourced and modified using parts from eBay Motors. The car features a coil-over suspension conversion, Wilwood disc brakes, racing bucket seats from Corbeau, and upgraded headers and exhaust to amplify the Mopar V-8’s sound. Yet, the team maintained its vintage feel with a classic Momo wood-rimmed steering wheel and 15-inch American Racing wheels.
Norris praised the combination of modern and classic elements in the car. You feel that vintage vibe, but when you push it, there’s confidence knowing everything is up to spec, he noted.
Bringing this custom Barracuda to Texas perfectly fits the atmosphere of the U.S. GP, blending old-school power with the lively, energetic vibe of Austin. The crowd here is always a bit wild in a good way, which makes it one of the most exciting stops on the circuit, said Norris.
Fans attending the event can see the car up close at the McLaren/eBay garage and even vote on potential future modifications. While qualifying heats up, don’t be surprised if Norris is quietly enjoying a little Waylon Jennings in his helmet as he races around the track.
