Mazda’s 12R special edition MX-5 Miata gains 197 hp, aero upgrades, and exclusive features. Limited to 200 units, priced at $44,300.
Mazda has finally given its beloved MX-5 Miata a significant performance boost with the new 12R special edition, revealed at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. Following a teaser last year, Mazda officially debuted the limited-run model in Japan, offering an upgraded version of the soft-top Miata that combines power, precision, and exclusivity.
The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine in the Miata receives its second power boost since the car’s debut. Originally rated at 155 hp when the ND generation launched in 2015, the engine was later upgraded to 181 hp, and now, after further enhancements, it delivers a respectable 197 hp. While the 16-horsepower increase may seem modest, in such a lightweight car, Mazda promises that the performance boost will be highly noticeable, providing more thrilling driving dynamics.
The Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R, as it’s officially known, features numerous performance upgrades, including a revised intake, exhaust, cylinder heads, pistons, and camshafts. On the exterior, it boasts an aerodynamic body kit and Aero Gray paint, complemented by lightweight forged Rays TE37 wheels and Yokohama Advan AD09 tires. Brembo front brakes, a Fujitsubo exhaust, and a rear spoiler further enhance the car’s sporty appeal, while height-adjustable Bilstein dampers provide improved handling. Inside, you’ll find Recaro bucket seats with a Sabelt four-point harness, plus Alcantara upholstery on the steering wheel, handbrake, and gear knob for added luxury and grip.
The 12R will be produced in extremely limited numbers, with only 200 units available at a price of approximately $44,300. Each model will be individually numbered, with a special “12R” badge on the rear and a plaque on the engine. Orders will open in Japan this fall, with a lottery system in place if demand exceeds availability.
For those who miss out, Mazda will also offer a more widely available Spirit Racing Roadster starting mid-2025, which shares many of the upgrades of the 12R, minus the extra horsepower, exhaust system, and racing seats.
