May 17, 2016 – Mercedes-Benz has been banned from using its Airscarf technology after the system was ruled as a patent violation; as a result, the company will have to disable the system in unsold cars.
Airscarf uses vents at the base of the front-seat headrests to blow warm air onto passengers’ necks in Mercedes convertibles such as the SLK, SL and E-, S- and C-Class convertibles. However, the ruling applies only to the German market, where the company will have to stop advertising the feature and pay royalties to patent holder Ludwig Schatzinger.
Customers who already bought Mercedes convertibles with the Airscarf feature will be allowed to use the system, and fortunately, the patent expires on December 25, so Mercedes won’t be forced to block this tech for more than a few months.
