Mercedes-Benz is introducing a bold new grille design on the upcoming GLC electric SUV, marking a shift away from the soft, rounded style of the EQ lineup. Drawing inspiration from its early 20th-century models, the company brings back the classic square grille pattern first seen on the 1902 Simplex.
This modernized version of the heritage design features a striking grid of 942 illuminated square elements. These LED dots can be animated to create a welcome light show when unlocking the vehicle. The large central Mercedes star also lights up, bordered by a glowing frame for added effect. For those preferring a more understated look, a non-illuminated option offers the same pattern in a muted finish, enclosed by a chrome frame with frosted-style plastic inserts.
Two finishes will be available: Silver Shadow and Dark Chrome Optic. The GLC EV will be the first model to showcase this updated front-end style when it debuts at the Munich IAA auto show in September.
Mercedes plans to use this grille across future electric, hybrid, and gas-powered models. The updated design brings a familiar yet futuristic identity that may better appeal to buyers, especially in markets where previous EV models struggled to connect.
