Nasser Al-Attiyah clinches last gasp Cyprus Rally thriller

September 27, 2015– Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah and French co-driver Matthieu Baumel won a thrilling Cyprus Rally, the Nicosia-based round of both the ERC and MERC.

With just 1.3 seconds separating Al-Attiyah and Poland’s Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) heading into the 16th and final 13km stage, the Qatari held on to record his 58th MERC victory and another maximum points haul as he closes in on an 11th regional title in 13 years. Kajetanowicz had led from the third to the start of the 15th stage and eventually lost out by just seven seconds.

Qatar’s Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Ford Fiesta RRC) finished third and ERC regulars Bruno Magalhaes (Peugeot 208 T16) and Robert Consani (Citroën DS3 R5) were fourth and fifth.

Middle East attention now switches to the Jordan Rally on October 15-17.
