Toyota’s South African branch made the announcement via its official Facebook page, on which it confirmed that Al-Attiyah and French co-driver Mathieu Baumel will race for Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa and they will have Giniel de Villiers (South Africa) and navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz (Germany) as their team-mates.
The Qatari’s first Dakar victory came in a Volkswagen Touareg back in 2011, while his second victory occurred four years later in 2015 onboard a Mini All4 Racing. De Villiers, meanwhile, won the event in 2009 with Volkswagen.
Dakar 2017 will go through Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina in a 12-day journey between January 2 and 14.
