Omoda Enters UK Market with Affordable SUVs

Omoda launches in the UK, introducing the mid-sized Omoda 5 and electric Omoda E5 SUVs, offering premium features at competitive prices.

Omoda has officially made its debut in the UK, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese brand. The launch event in London showcased the first models to hit the UK market: the ICE-powered Omoda 5 and the electric Omoda E5, both mid-sized SUVs with a crossover design. Already present in over 40 global markets, Omoda aims to expand its reach to more than 60 markets within the next three years.

Chen Chun Qing, executive vice president of Omoda’s parent company Chery International, emphasized the importance of the UK launch: “This week marks a significant moment for Omoda as we enter a key market. Omoda is leading the way in intelligent and new energy technology, already outperforming established brands in some regions. We are building a forward-thinking brand, offering highly specified, premium models at competitive prices.”

The brand’s introduction to the UK market includes strategic plans for selling and supporting their vehicles. The Omoda 5 starts at an accessible £25,235, with the electric E5 priced at £33,055. With competitive pricing, Omoda is not only targeting potential buyers of the Kia Sportage or Nissan Qashqai but also those considering used cars. Omoda’s UK product manager, Oliver Lowe, highlighted the value proposition: “We’re offering a new car at a price point close to some used car options, complete with the confidence of a warranty and breakdown cover. It’s something new and fresh, and it’s yours from the start.”

Lowe also noted that Omoda might attract customers who have been priced out of their usual brands due to post-Covid price increases: “We provide an alternative for those who might have been loyal to a particular brand but can no longer afford it. Our cars offer great specifications and power at a lower segment price.”

Omoda has already established a 60-dealer network across the UK, ensuring widespread availability and support. “We have excellent dealer partners who bring a wealth of experience from various brands,” said Lowe. “This network gives us extensive coverage, offering customers the dealer experience they’re accustomed to.”

The brand is backing its vehicles with a seven-year warranty, and a parts network managed by DHL, ensuring quick and reliable service. “Our DHL hub in the middle of the country is well-stocked with parts, allowing us to respond swiftly, just as traditional brands do,” Lowe added.

Omoda anticipates higher sales for the ICE model due to its lower price point but is also focusing on meeting the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. “We expect to sell around 22% EVs to meet the mandate,” Lowe said, adding that they are developing new strategies to achieve this target, including potential fleet investments.

Looking ahead, Omoda plans to introduce at least two new models in the UK next year. The larger Omoda 9, comparable in size to the Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne, and the smaller Omoda 3, which will compete with the Ford Puma and Vauxhall Mokka. Additionally, the Omoda 7, similar in size to the Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage, is also on the horizon.

Oliver Lowe confirmed, “We are planning two to three launches next year,” signaling Omoda’s commitment to growing its presence in the competitive UK market.
